WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (January 22, 2022) – Senior Allie Moss filled the stat sheet with nine points, six rebounds and seven assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women’s basketball team defeated Lycoming College 63-46 Saturday in a MAC Freedom matchup at Lamade Gymnasium.
Senior Jess Broad finished with a team-high 13 points and sophomore Elissa Nsenkyire came off the bench to add 12 for the Ducks, who won their sixth straight to move to 13-2 on the year and to 8-1 in conference play. Stevens is a half-game behind DeSales, who sits atop the conference standings.
Meghan Dufner scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Warriors, who fell to 4-13 on the year and to 4-5 in league play. Lycoming has dropped three straight and is now tied with Wilkes and Arcadia in the standings.
Moss turned in an impressive first half as the Ducks opened a 14-point lead at the intermission. The Raleigh, North Carolina native scored six points, pulled down four boards and handed out three assists in just 15 minutes, while finishing a team-high +12 over the first two quarters. The fourth-year guard opened the scoring on the Ducks’ first possession, hitting a long three to put Stevens in front.
It was a strong defensive effort that helped the Ducks open a lead. After Dufner’s elbow jumper gave Lycoming a 7-5 lead midway through the opening quarter, the Ducks held the Warriors scoreless until nearly the same point in the second quarter, a stretch of 9:41. While the Ducks’ defense clamped down on the Warriors, built an eight-point lead, with Dufner’s short jumper ending the stretch.
Moss’ second three of the game pushed the Ducks’ lead to double figures and a Vanessa Elliott three and a Broad jumper sent the teams into halftime with Stevens comfortably in front.
The Ducks held Lycoming to just three field goals in each of the first three quarters (9 for 46) and the Warriors didn’t connect from long range until early in the third quarter.
The final quarter brought a slightly frenetic pace to the game, with the teams combining for 20 baskets alone, after totaling 25 over the first three quarters. Stevens closed out the contest with one of the best offensive performances of the season, shooting 11 for 13 from the field (84.6%). Broad made four of her five attempts from the floor in the period and Moss assisted on four of the Ducks’ 11 baskets.
Pivotal Point
- With the Ducks holding a two-point lead in the first quarter, senior Amber Porrett blocked a Mya Wetzel layup and then drew an offensive foul after Lycoming had retained possession following the rejection.
- Senior Meghan Douglas scored on the Ducks’ next offensive possession, pushing the lead to 11-7. Stevens would maintain its lead for the remainder of the game.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens finished 47.4% from the floor (27 for 57), marking the Ducks’ second-highest shooting percentage of the season.
- The Ducks held Lycoming to just 30% shooting (18 for 60) – the seventh time a Stevens opponent has been held under 35%. Stevens leads the MAC Freedom in scoring defense and ranks second in opponents’ field-goal percentage, holding opponents to 49.8 points per game on 32.9% shooting.
- Porrett came off the bench to pull down a team-high nine rebounds, helping Stevens to a 38-37 advantage on the glass. The Dumont, New Jersey native also blocked a career-high three shots.
- Although Lycoming had a 16-12 edge in offensive rebounds, it was the Ducks who held a 9-3 margin in second-chance points.
- The Ducks turned 18 Lycoming turnovers into 18 points.
- Broad’s 13 points moved the Marlboro, New Jersey native to 954 career points.
Unsung Hero
- Nsenkyire came off the bench to shoot 6 for 11 from the floor for her fourth career double-digit scoring effort. She was one of three players on either team to reach double figures. The Hillsborough, New Jersey native also drew a team-high four fouls.
