Guadalupe, affectionately known as Lupita to her friends, was born in Panna Maria, Texas on December 18, 1920 to Felicita Silva Guerra and Sabas Guerra. Lupita was the youngest of 8 brothers and sisters.
Lupita married Gregorio (George to his coworkers) Lopez in Karnes City, Texas. They were migrant farm workers who moved around Texas and other states. They eventually settled in Lamesa, Texas where they set up housekeeping and lived there together the remainder of their lives.
Lupita was active in the Catholic Churches – Our Lady of Guadalupe and St. Margaret Mary Catholic Churches – where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She also was a Guadalupana, a society of Mexican-American Catholic women providing leadership and works of charity in the Church, a member of the Cursillistas and Charismatic group.
Lupita was a loving and devoted wife and mother to her family. She worked outside the home all day in the fields picking crops and chopping cotton; then she would go home to care for her husband and children. She cleaned houses to earn money. Gregorio, Essie and Ector would milk cows, then she would make cheese from the milk and sell it. She made burritos to sell to laborers at different work sites and busied herself with periodic garage sales to raise money. At Church, she would be seen in the kitchen cooking food and operating a food booth at the Church fiestas. She would take communion to the sick and elderly that were homebound or living in nursing homes. She was always willing to help her friends and neighbors.
Lupita is survived by three sons, Santos, Ebelardo and Ector and their families. With her husband urging the children to, “get an education,” she also encouraged them to get an education. She also loved being a mother to her daughters-in-law as well as grandmother, great-grandmother-great-great-grandmother. She was a great-grandmother who loved God, who attended to the needs of others, and prayed for all of her family. She was proud of being the grandmother of 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Lupita is preceded by her husband, Gregorio, and daughter, Esmeralda, Lupita will be buried next to Gregorio, in the Dawson County Cemetery on 1010 County Road 20, in Lamesa. Funeral Services are provided by Gonzales Funeral Home.
