SCH Expands free Community COVID-19 Testing

MARTINSBURG — Shenandoah Community Health is expanding its free, COVID-19 community testing hours. The PCR test is now be available through the drive-thru testing tent on 99 Tavern Road Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. with no appointment or order.

This service is available to SCH patients and non-patients, and results are received directly from the lab, typically between 24-48 hours.

Healthy Berkeley announces new health and wellness app

MARTINSBURG — Health Berkeley has announced the launch of the Change Your State app to bring health and wellness to local communities.

The app is focused in the areas of mind, move and eat and is designed to bring a wealth of resources to the fingertips of community residents.

App resources will include blog posts, workouts, healthy recipes and meditations. Users will also be able to track their daily goals and earn points for accomplishing these goals. All participants who earn a minimum number of points each month will be entered to win monthly prizes.

There will also be a Change Your State Facebook page and a weekly Change Your State podcast for anyone without a smart phone.

The free app will be available for download on Jan. 8 in the Apple and Google play stores by searching “Change Your State”. The app challenge will run from Jan. 15 through April 15.

WVU Medicine offers safe walking program

MARTINSBURG — Walk with Ease, an Arthritis Foundation-certified program designed to share strategies for walking safely and comfortably, will be offered at the Berkeley 2000 Center, 273 Woodbury Ave. in Martinsburg.

The program will be offered Jan. 25 through March 3, 2022, on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. All participants will receive the Walk With Ease Guide Book, and the program is free and open to all.

This structured, six-week walking program is designed to help people living with arthritis better manage their pain, but anyone can participate and benefit from the program. Based on research and tested programs in exercise science, behavior change and arthritis management, Walk With Ease is shown to reduce the pain and discomfort of arthritis, increase balance, strength and walking pace, build confidence to be physically active and improve overall health.

Walk With Ease is a structured walking program that offers support, information and tools to help participants develop successful exercise routines. During the program, participants will learn proper stretching and pain management techniques, as well as build stamina and walking pace.

Pre-registration for the Walk With Ease program is required and space is limited. Masks are suggested and social distancing will be followed. Free National Diabetes Prevention Program set

WINCHESTER, Va. — Valley Health is offering new sessions of the National Diabetes Prevention Program, a free, 12-month class designed to help adults who are at risk for developing diabetes and are ready to make lasting lifestyle changes. One group will meet virtually on Mondays from noon to 1 p.m., while the other will meet in person at Warren Memorial Hospital on Wednesdays from 3:30–4:30 p.m.

To be eligible for the National Diabetes Prevention Program, individuals must be overweight, not have a diabetes diagnosis and have one or more of the following: Elevated blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, family history of diabetes, physically inactive and history of gestational diabetes.

Good Samaritan Free Clinic schedule

MARTINSBURG — Good Samaritan provides free health care to the uninsured and underinsured. The main clinic is at 601 S. Raleigh St., Martinsburg. They do not take appointments and provide family practice care at all the clinics except women’s health evening.

Hours for the clinic are:

• Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

• First Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.

• Women’s Health Clinic on the Third Tuesday at 5 p.m.

• Rescue Mission every Monday 10:30 a.m. to Noon.

Living Well program leader training

MARTINSBURG — A free leadership training for a program to assist those dealing with chronic disease will be held Jan. 19 thru March 2, 2022, via Zoom.

Leaders help others learn the skills needed to manage their chronic conditions and enhance their quality of life. Previous teaching or health care experience is not necessary, just a willingness to help others improve their health.

Leaders must attend all seven weeks of the free training to be certified. The first session will be held 1-3 p.m. Jan. 19. For the next six weeks, there will be two meetings per week from 1-3 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday through March 2.

Virtual chronic pain self-management program new session announced

MARTINSBURG — Living Well, a chronic pain self-management program, is a weekly workshop designed to help individuals coping with one or more chronic pain learn to take day-to-day responsibility for their care, increase the skills necessary to manage their pain and work effectively with their health care professional.

A new Zoom workshop begins Jan. 20 and meets every Thursday through Feb. 24 from 5-7 p.m. The six-week program will be interactive, informative and fun offering the same content as the face-to-face workshop.

Living Well is free and open to those with chronic pain and other health issues related to pain. Everyone can benefit from learning the skills to coordinate all the activities needed to manage their health, as well as help them maintain a full and active life.

Participants will need a computer, phone or tablet in order to access Zoom. The device must also have a camera and microphone. A quiet place and a stable chair are also recommended for joining the classes.
