A ski vacation rarely comes to mind when you think of bargain trips. That’s been especially true over the past decade, as hotels in skiing areas have tended to go upscale, adding amenities and raising prices.
Now some enterprising hoteliers have come up with what they hope is a marketing sweet spot: a midrange accommodation loosely based on the Japanese model of capsule, or pod, hotels targeted at business travelers, featuring sleeping spaces with room for little more than a bed. Upscale, moderately priced versions of this model have begun to spring up in skiing locations.
