The wild process of college football bowl game selections goes down all day long Sunday as FBS teams fill slots in the postseason. It all starts at noon ET with the announcement of the four College Football Playoff teams and continues with the release of the final CFP Rankings and rest of the New Year’s Six games at 2:30 p.m. before culminating late in the afternoon once every one of the bowl games is announced.
Of course, there will be plenty off leaks and rumors throughout the day, which is exactly why we are here to help sort through everything. CBS Sports will be with you the entire day updating this page with every new bowl game announcement as the process unfolds.

AP Top 25 is out
It’s not a perfect forecast of the CFP rankings, but the AP Top 25 is out, and it looks like this: Bama, Michigan, Georgia, Cincy. Here’s the whole poll at this link. Plenty of other teams rising. Would be surprised if the CFP rankings don’t follow suit, but you never know.

A reminder of our order of operations here over the next couple of hours:
12 p.m. — Selection Show begins
12:15 p.m. — Top four revealed with College Football Playoff semifinal matchups set for the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl (both Dec. 31)
2:30 p.m. — The rest of the New Year’s Six will be announced (Rose, Sugar, Peach, Fiesta) along with the final top 25 from the selection committee.
Post-2:30 p.m. — Remainder of the 2021-22 bowl schedule filled out with announcements from schools, bowls, conferences and more.

In addition to the plethora of bowl news we’re set to get over the next 6 hours, it’s looking like we might have plenty of movement on the coaching carousel as well. Brent Venables has been reported as the frontrunner for Oklahoma and Mario Cristobal is reportedly closing in on a deal with Miami. That would obviously create another Power Five opening at Oregon, but it would bring some closure to two of the biggest openings left on the coaching carousel

This would be the SEC’s second time getting two teams in the field after Alabama and Georgia both went following the 2017 season as well. No other conference has ever sent two teams to the CFP. Not hard to see why the SEC is cool with the status quo in terms of the field’s size. This field may be an impetus for change among the power brokers who have been dragging their feet on expansion.

We are about an hour out from the selections, and while we think we know what the committee will do, you never truly know. The reality is that an Alabama, Michigan, Georgia, Cincinnati field will leave THREE of the Power Five leagues out and include a G5 team for the first time. Are we 100% sure the committee has a stomach for that?

What will be significant in the selection committee’s final rankings is how the rest of the top 12 and top 16 teams stack up against each other and what that means for the New Year’s Six. Pittsburgh, Baylor, Utah are all going to be in thanks to winning their conference championship but not making the playoff, leaving an SEC and Big Ten spot to award along with at-large bids. Ole Miss, Ohio State, Michigan State, Oklahoma State and Notre Dame will all be eyeing those rankings outside the top four to ensure a place in the sport’s biggest postseason stage.

We spend so much time debating all the different scenarios that could lead to tough decisions for the selection committee at the end of the season, but most years the action on the field makes their job for choosing the top four pretty easy. I don’t get the sense that there will be anyone other than Alabama, Michigan, Georgia and Cincinnati in the field, but seeding and bowl location will be interesting as we project the matchups.
